He was born on August 6, 1952, in Wichita, KS to the late Robert Joseph Churchill and Peggy LuAnn (nee: Quackenbush) Churchill. The family moved to Santa Anna, CA in May 1960 where he grew up playing baseball and spending long days outdoors with his siblings developing a lifelong love for adventure. Upon graduating from La Quinta High School, Steve enlisted in the United States Navy on January 15, 1971, and began his Naval career at RTC Naval Training Center San Diego, CA, graduating April 1972. He attended NTC at Naval Air Station Memphis in Millington, TN where he graduated with top scholastic honors in July 1971. He began his fleet experience at COMCVW-14 NAS Miramar in San Diego, experiencing his first “Westpac” months after reporting. Steve relocated to Norfolk, VA in 1980, and then to NAVAIR HQ Crystal City Arlington, VA in 1991 where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge and retirement on January 1, 1997, as an Aviation Maintenance Senior Chief. During his service he earned his Enlisted Aviation Warfare Specialist (EAWS) pin and many service medals, commendations, and citations, including the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (x3), Vietnam Service Medal with two stars (x2), Kuwait Liberation Medal; Sharpshooter Rifleman Ribbon, and numerous Good Conduct Medals. He graduated from Tidewater Community College with an A.S. in Business Administration in June 1993. He became a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in December 2003 while attending the College of Southern Maryland. After retiring from the US Navy, he began his career with the Department of Defense at NAVAIR Patuxent River until his retirement in May 2024. |
